big night of racing to claim

South Australian Junior
Sedan Title at Waikerie's
Sunline Speedway on
Forty drivers from around the
state competed over three rounds
of hotly contested heats, battling
for valuable points to get them
into the 20-lap main event.
After 12 gruelling heats,
WA's Josh Fraser was top of
the points, closely followed by
Nathan Thorne (SA), Robbie
Hawkins, Brandon Atto and
Another 21 drivers contested
the B main, with the top two
drivers earning spots at the rear
of the main event.
From the green flag, Luke
Storer and Jarrin Bielby pulled
away from the field and looked to
have the transfer spots secured.
However, three laps from the
finish, Bielby had a right front
tyre go down as he entered the
third turn and made contact with
the wall. Jaiden Ruhs, who had
been closing rapidly, made heavy
rear-end contact with Bielby and
both were out.
At the restart, Storer and
Dylan Richter held the rest of
the field off and earned their way
into the title race.
In the main event, Fraser and
Thorne were side by side for the
opening two laps before Thorne
went too high, found the loose
dirt in turn two and ended up
back in position five.
For several laps after that, it
was nose-to-tail racing between
Fraser, Atto, Learoyd and
On lap eight, Fraser got loose
exiting turn two and spun, but
without yellows from officials.
By the time he had recovered
and resumed racing, Fraser was
well down the field.
However, the field bunched
up on the following lap when
the yellows did come on from an
incident in turn three between
Willington and Hawkins.
The follow laps were littered
with yellows as drivers pushed
hard to make up positions.
This was evident when Matty
Smith was disqualified for failing
to go rear of field after an earlier
With six to go, there were two
clear battles that people were
Learoyd and Brennan were
racing hard for the win, while
Jayden Edwards and Kye Walters
were racing hard for third.
On the final lap, Brennan
attempted a bold move around the
outside of Learoyd through turns
three and four but just fell short.
Learoyd won by a car's length
from Brennan, with Edwards
third ahead of Walters, and a
hard-charging Storer taking fifth
Thorne was the highest-
placed South Australian, coming
home in sixth.
After a large amount of
racing provided by the juniors,
support classes were light on in
terms of numbers and events.
Formula 500s competed over
two heats and featured five
Lisa Walker had a good night,
claiming all three races and
narrowly missing out on setting
a new eight-lap track record by
0.13 seconds. Pushing Walker all
the way were Patrick Merret and
Jason Norris, Joe Mercorrella,
while Steph Munn gained some
valuable track time in her debut
at the venue.
Super Sedans had five drivers
competing in two heats.
Steve Schwarz put on a
driving display in heat one,
taking an easy win ahead
of Barry Perrett and Mark
Symonds. In heat two, Schwarz
had a tougher time. Ultimately
the victory went to young Kaleb
Perrett, who held off immense
pressure from Schwarz and his
own grandfather, Barry Perrett.
Low numbers for the Modified
Sedans and Street Stocks saw the
two categories combined and
competions held over two heats.
Heat one went to Marty Raams
ahead of his son Trevor, Street
Stock driver Pete Thompson and
Rodney Strother. Heat two had
the same result, except Strother
was a non starter.
The next event at the Sunline
Speedway is this Sunday night.
On the program will be a
round of the Late Model Tri
Series, Wingless Sprints,
AMCAs, Juniors Sedans, Super
Sedans, Modified Sedans, Street
Stocks and V8 Dirt Modifieds
Gates open from 3pm, with
