Mud hampers Oz speedway titles
Speedway hosted a big
weekend of speedway
kart racing over the
Anzac weekend for the
Australian Speedway Kart
On Friday, the speedway was
home to some scrutineering and
practice followed with a dinner at
Waikerie Hotel Motel.
Entries from all over Australia
came to contest the event, in-
cluding most current Australian
champions in their respective
Racers returned to the track
on Saturday to contest three
rounds of heat races, but unfortu-
nately Mother Nature took its toll.
About 8mm of rain fell over-
night on Friday, meaning the
track had a lot of water on it, so
pumping got underway to remove
the water from the corners.
Racing started a little late and
only four races were completed
before rain showers passed over
It was decided to abandon
the remaining racing and come
back earlier on Sunday to try and
complete the event. Misty rain on
Sunday morning delayed racing
again, but it eventually got under-
way about 11am.
The track came back after a
few muddy heat races and from
then on, with full credit to Rob
Stevens and his crew, the track
remained brilliant for the remain-
der of the event.
Some competitive racing fol-
lowed and all heat racing was

Heat racing earns the all im-
portant points for starting posi-
tion in the finals. Following the
heats there were a few surprising
omissions from the top four, along
with a few surprising entries in
the top four.
Finals began under lights with
eight divisions contesting hard
fought 15-lap finals.
Overall, the racing was fast
and furious, with few drivers
Local gun driver Jason Wilson,
who drove to a second place finish
on Saturday night at Murray
Bridge Speedway for the Lighting
Sprint state title, was happy that
Saturday's racing was cancelled
because he was able to contest
all heat races in the 200cc twins
Wilson amassed top points to
earn pole position for the final
and went on to claim Australia
two in a tough race.
Berri driver Lee Payne, in the
125cc pro class took out Australia
one after starting from position
three in the final.
The result followed on from his
second place finish at the recent
Victorian Title in Mildura.
Ben Morris also finished a
good second in the junior class.
Tahleesha Mayes, Liam
Aunger and Bob Latta from Mildu-
ra's Sunraysia Dirt Karters all
won their respective classes and
quite a few other Mildura based
drivers figured in the results,
including the very well presented
team of Martin Boyz Racing.
Overall, it turned into an
excellent event and most drivers
went home happy, if not with
their own performance, at
least with the event. The next
Australian title is slated for
Tasmania, so it will be interesting
to see how many make that trip.
A couple more big race
meetings are coming up for
speedway karters, with the
Allpower Nationals in Mildura
from May 15-16 , and the South
Australian Title at Renmark on
May 23 before the season begins
to wind down.
