AFTER winning two division
one titles in four years, Waikerie
is now setting itself for a return
to lower Riverland Lawn Tennis
Waikerie defeated Cobdogla by
just three games in Saturday’s grand
final at Waikerie.
However, the club only entered
one senior team this season, some-
thing it hopes to rectify soon accord-
ing to star player Troy Lehmann.
“We might lose a couple out of di-
vision one next season, but we have
spoken about trying to get a division
two or three team in,” he said.
“We’ll just have to wait and see
“This was our first year of being
back in the junior competition and
we won the division two boys and
the division one boys made the final.
“We’re starting to get some good
numbers around the juniors so hope-
fully they can keep improving and
move up to the senior ranks.”
Waikerie successfully hosted all
senior and junior grand finals on
Saturday, in another positive move
forward, according to Lehmann.
“The club did a good job of show-
casing the new complex,” he said.
“We had the juniors there in the
morning and it was a good day.”
Lehmann said the rivalry built
with Cobdogla continued to grow
“We’ve been in the past four
grand finals together and we’re even
at two each,” he said.
“We knew that if we got our full
side we’d be very strong. We’ve got
good depth in the men and we were
hoping that was going to get us over
the line, which was the case.”
Lehmann praised the efforts of
Cobdogla’s women, who kept their
side in the match.
“The Cobby girls were in good
form,” he said. “Katie Saville played
well to clean Penny Kroehn up 6-0
after Penny beat her in the final
“Every game was pretty import-
ant because it came down to games.”
“Our men Tom Waterson and
Shaun Steele had good 9-1 wins over
a couple of young up-and-comers
“They’re very strong for second
and third players and could probably
play number one fairly easily for
most other sides.”
