upcoming information night.
The Riverland Musical Soci-
ety (RMS) will this year bring
Oklahoma to Riverland audi-
Auditions will be held next
month, before rehearsals begin
at the Bonney Theatre, Barmera.
Oklahoma was the first musi-
cal written by the multi-award-
winning duo of Richard Rodgers
and Oscar Hammerstein, and
proved to be a box office smash.
Set in a Western Indian ter-
ritory just after the turn of the
century, the high-spirited rivalry
between the local farmers and
cowboys provides the colourful
background against which Curly,
a handsome cowboy, and Laurey,
a winsome farm girl, play out
their love story.
Jointly directed by RMS vet-
erans John Dawes and Victor
Kudra with musical direction by
Karen Skewes and choreography
by Rosie Clark, the show will
include the well-known songs
Oh what a beautiful morning,
People will say we're in love, The
Surrey with the fringe on top and,
of course, Oklahoma.
"If you can sing, dance, act or
throw a lasso, we want to meet
you, Mr Dawes said.
"If you're even slightly inter-
ested in being involved on stage
or backstage, the information
night is the perfect place to come
and find out more."
RMS will also present an
inaugural youth production,
Disney's Aladdin Jr, as part of
this year's activities.
Disney's Aladdin Jr is set in
Agrabah, the City of Enchant-
ment, where every beggar has a
story and every camel has a tail.
The musical is an abridged
stage adaptation of the Disney
hit and is filled with magic,
mayhem and flying carpet rides.
Director Gretel Mann will
be joined by assistant direc-
tor Tracy Lysne, choreogra-
pher Demi Nicholson and vocal
coaches Mark Gover and Sam
The show will feature an
Academy Award-winning score
of songs -- including A Whole
New World and Friend Like Me --
and is bound to hit the right note
with Riverland families.
Following the success of last
year's production of Annie, the
Riverland Musical Society prom-
ises to add another two excellent
productions to its list of credits
An information night for both
productions will be held at the
Bonney Theatre on Wednesday,
January 28, commencing at 6pm
for the junior production and
7.30pm for Oklahoma.
For more information, phone
John Dawes on 0407 602 113 or

Cuts to concessions
MORE than 1000 concession holders in
the Mid Murray Council area are set to be
disadvantaged by government cuts coming
into effect on July 1.
In June last year, the Commonwealth Govern-
ment cut funding to the State Government for
pensioner and other concessions amounting to
$27 million. The State Government has main-
tained concessions on council rates paid under
the SA Parliament's Rates and Land Tax Remis-
sion Act 1986 ($34 million) this financial year.
However, it has announced it will stop conces-
sions on rates from July 1.
"We estimate that next year's rates, for most
people currently eligible for a concession, that
this will include a bill shock of around 20 per
cent without the concession," said Mid Murray
Mayor Dave Burgess.
The discontinuation of the concession will
result in 1240 concession holders in the Mid
Murray Council area being affected with a re-
moval of $237,719 in financial assistance.
Mayor Burgess said: "Council is opposed to
the federal cut and is also opposing the State
Government's decision to abolish concessions
on council rates.
"We need you to help us to help our most vul-
nerable to retain these concession payments."

decision, contact your local Member of Parlia-
ment. Visit: www.lga.sa.gov.au/localmp
