WAIKERIE netball and basketball star
Hannah Lehmann won her first Riverland
Sportsperson of the Year Award on Friday
The 36-year-old claimed the award after winning
the Riverland division one women's basketball and
A1 netball best and fairests this year.
Lehmann said she was shocked to win the
award and it had not sunk in yet.
"Maybe in a few years' time I'll look back on
2014 very fondly," she said. "Particularly as I'm
getting older and towards the end of my career, it
was a real honour to be recognised.
"I've been here a few times now, so it's nice to
take (the trophy) home.
"Last time I came through these doors I came
to the netball presentation and walked out with a
trophy that night when I didn't expect to win it. So
it's a bit like deja vu, really."
Lehmann said she was so sure she would not
win the award that she was set on missing the
"I coach my daughter in basketball on Friday
nights and I was resigned to the fact that those
who had reached state level would be the ones to
take out the title," she said. "It was only because
a few friends from Waikerie were nominated that
we decided to all go together."
Loxton's Tamzin Jenke won the Peter Frank-
com Riverland Junior Sports Star of the Year
Award, while Berri District Youth Club coach
Jane McFarlane won the John Ormsby Coach of
the Year Award.
Renmark lawn bowler Jocie Cooper won the
Steve McFarlane Contribution to Sport Award.
Five more legends were inducted to the River-
land Legends of Sport on the night.
Water skiier Peggy Flewellyn, who won Aus-
tralian titles in 1962 and 1966 and competed at two
world championships, attended the night, along
with professional golfer Anne-Marie Knight,
Olympic and Commonwealth medallist swimmer
Hayden Stoeckel and South Australian football
legend Neil Kerley,
Sailing inductee Paul Kassebaum was unable
to attend the ceremony, but was represented by his
